Look, rugby is that game where thirty massive humans spend eighty minutes trying to turn each other into pancakes. No pads. No helmets. No forward passes. Just pure chaos and big hits that make you go “ouch” just watching from the couch. A lot of people have seen those viral clips of someone getting folded in half and then both players just laugh and help each other up but not many know how this crazy sport started and how it became a global obsession. Read on more to find out.
It all kicked off in 1823 at Rugby School in England. The story goes this dude William Webb Ellis was playing regular soccer got mad grabbed the ball with his hands and just started running. Everyone else was like “wait that’s illegal” but then they all started doing it too and boom rugby was born. By the 1870s clubs were everywhere in England then it spread to Scotland Ireland Wales and the British took it to all their colonies.
New Zealand got it in the 1870s and turned into straight monsters. The All Blacks do that terrifying Haka war dance before every game and have been winning everything ever since. South Africa Australia Fiji Samoa Tonga France Ireland all got hooked hard. Tiny Pacific islands with like 100,000 people total keep producing giants who run faster than most NFL players.
Two main versions now:
Rugby Union 15 players each side the full 80-minute war. Non-stop running tackling kicking and lineouts where huge dudes lift other huge dudes in the air like it’s nothing.
Rugby Sevens only 7 players each side way faster shorter games. Added to the Olympics in 2016 and Fiji won the first gold then cried on the podium because it was their country’s first Olympic medal ever.
Biggest events:
Rugby World Cup every four years. New Zealand and South Africa dominate they’ve won like seven between them. The 2023 final was so brutal people still get emotional watching the hits.
Six Nations every spring England France Ireland Scotland Wales Italy going at it for six weeks straight.
No forward passes you can only pass sideways or backward but you can kick forward. Tackles are full-body explosions. After the game both teams go drink beer together win or lose everyone’s mates.
Rugby is for every age group little kids play tag rugby at five women’s game is growing crazy fast (New Zealand’s Black Ferns are unbeatable) and some legends are still starting at 38.
From one English school kid breaking the rules in 1823 to 90,000 people screaming while giants legally destroy each other today rugby never got soft it just got faster harder and way more fun.
Next time you see a clip of someone getting trucked and both players just smile and get up turn the volume up. That’s rugby. Big hits big hearts zero quit.
